Synopsis
An archival special effect from a 1940s Hollywood film shows a house collapsing during a staged earthquake. By repeating the same scene from five different angles, the film frees the shot from its dramaturgy, allowing us to see the catastrophe as a carefully calculated cinematic construction.
About the Director
Christoph Girardet (b. 1966) is a German video artist and filmmaker working with found footage from film history. Through editing and repetition he exposes the inner workings of cinematic reality. He studied fine art at the Braunschweig University of Art (1988--1994). Since 1989 he has made films and video installations, most often with Matthias Müller (1999--2022). He has taken part in major festivals including Cannes, Venice, Berlin, Locarno, and Rotterdam, and exhibited at MoMA PS1 and Palais de Tokyo. He lives and works in Hanover, Germany.
